Muscular Dystrophy Awareness 2018

Image
Held in conjunction with World Duchenne Awareness Day, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore (MDAS)  held the Live Above Carnival at The Cathay yesterday with the aim to create more awareness in our community for Muscular Dystrophy. There were sharing sessions by beneficiaries of the association to help us better understand the daily challenges they face and even a showcase of the inclusive sports like Boccia and Power Soccer, and even a Wheelchair Simulation Course that helped us engage with the beneficiaries. Gracing this event was guest-of honour Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Social and Family Development who unveiled their new logo to mark the rebranding of the MDAS.  It truly was an inclusive event and the kiddos had fun at the carnival, learning and understanding more about how our friends who face physical challenges overcome many difficulties and still lead a fulfilling life. Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic condition that results in the increased weakening and...

Mass Blindfold Yoga with Trium Fitness

Image
Overflowing with gratitude and respect for everyone who came to join us at Blindfold Yoga this morning, organised by Trium Fitness at Aperia Mall. Teaching this class has definitely made me more conscious of giving precise and accurate verbal cues such that it guides everyone safely into position. We start to become so much more in tune with our hearing and special awareness. The intention in holding this session that involved both the visually impaired and normal sighted individuals was more than just to experience a yoga class together as a community as we flowed through from one pose to the next and held hands on occasion to support one another. But it was mainly to bring awareness, respec...

Another Christmas wish come true via Be The Gift 3.0

This evening I took the kids along with me to fulfill one of the Christmas wishes of a beneficiary from the Muscular Dystrophy Association Of Singapore (MDAS).  Out of the many wishes collected for the initiative this time round, I adopted three including two meal requests to surprise the family especially the mom who is the main caregiver so that she could have abit more rest and not have to prepare a meal for that day. After some coordinating, speaking to the centre management to get a clearer idea on the families background and mental preparation on my part, I made a trip to visit the first family today along with my 3 older girls and a lot of food. Breaking the ice and surprising the family was the easy part and I got to meet the little girl Xin Lin who was bedridden and hooked up to a machine to help her breathe. She had been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy since she was an infant and now at 3 years old she can talk a little but it takes so much effort.  The hard part t...
