Muscular Dystrophy Awareness 2018

Held in conjunction with World Duchenne Awareness Day, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore (MDAS)  held the Live Above Carnival at The Cathay yesterday with the aim to create more awareness in our community for Muscular Dystrophy.

There were sharing sessions by beneficiaries of the association to help us better understand the daily challenges they face and even a showcase of the inclusive sports like Boccia and Power Soccer, and even a Wheelchair Simulation Course that helped us engage with the beneficiaries.

Gracing this event was guest-of honour Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Social and Family Development who unveiled their new logo to mark the rebranding of the MDAS.

It truly was an inclusive event and the kiddos had fun at the carnival, learning and understanding more about how our friends who face physical challenges overcome many difficulties and still lead a fulfilling life.

Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic condition that results in the increased weakening and breakdown of skeletal muscles over time and the degree to which it affects individuals can differ but for most sufferers, they eventually become unable to walk or even lift their arms. Simple movements become impossible which most of us take for granted. I can only imagine the daily challenges faced by beneficiaries and have the utmost respect for them and their family members/caregivers.
